Understand pitching statistics

Read the pitching totals and percentages alongside the pitch map, and understand how incomplete tags affect the numbers.

Read the pitching summary

Game reporting can show a compact line of pitching statistics for the selected pitcher, including:

  • Pitches — pitches recorded for the pitcher.
  • Strikes and Strike % — classified strike pitches and their share of classified pitches.
  • 1st-Pitch Strike % — how often the first recorded pitch of an identifiable plate appearance was a strike.
  • Whiff % — the report’s measure of swinging misses.
  • P/PA — pitches per recorded plate appearance.
  • K and BB — recorded strikeouts and walks. Other outcomes, such as HBP, may be displayed where available.

What counts as a strike?

A Called Strike, Swing Strike, strikeout result, Foul Ball, or ball put in play counts as a strike for the reporting classification. A Called Ball, walk-related ball, or other classified non-strike contributes to the ball side as applicable.

An untagged pitch should not automatically be treated as a confirmed ball. Where Assumed-ball Statistics is enabled, otherwise untagged pitches may be included as assumed balls; without that assumption, genuinely unclassified pitches are excluded from Strike % calculations.

Use the numbers with the chart

Choose a pitcher and review the pitch map, pitch list, and Game at-bats together. Pitch filters help you examine a subset, but the statistics summarize that pitcher's complete recorded session.

Historical dataA percentage can only be as specific as the information recorded. Older games, missing result tags, or partial at-bat sequences may not support every statistic. Play Catch should not imply a missing outcome was recorded.

For pitch-by-pitch questions, see Filter pitches inside a report.
