Pitches

Fastball

Goal: Compare command during regular stretch, quick stretch, and pitchout situations.

Warmup

Before the first pitch.

Complete a proper throwing warm-up before scoring pitches. Use full-body movement, progressive catch play, and enough mound-ramp-up pitches for the arm, fastball, and delivery to feel ready.

Warm-up throws are not included in the workout score, but they still count toward the pitcher’s total throwing workload for the day.

Coaching Focus

  • Establish the called location before every pitch.
  • Keep the quick stretch controlled, athletic, and repeatable.
  • Do not trade all command for speed to the plate.
  • Make every pitchout reachable and usable on the called side.
  • Judge timing against the pitcher’s delivery—not one universal standard.

Set Up Your Pitch Track Session

Choose Bullpen Session. Create four markers:

+

REGULAR

Use for fastballs thrown from the pitcher’s normal stretch delivery.

+

QUICK

Use for fastballs thrown from the pitcher’s controlled quick stretch.

+

PITCHOUT RHH

Use for pitchouts directed to the right-handed-hitter side.

+

PITCHOUT LHH

Use for pitchouts directed to the left-handed-hitter side.

Results

Score the Session

Count fastballs and pitchouts that reach the called area and remain usable for the situation. Compare the four delivery markers in the report.

18–24 usable pitches

Great

The pitcher maintained usable command across regular, quick, and pitchout situations. Confirm whether one mode was clearly strongest.

14–17 usable pitches

Competitive

Runner-control execution was usable but uneven. Identify whether location changed most during the quick stretch or pitchouts.

0–13 usable pitches

Keep Working

Command changed too sharply when the delivery sped up or moved outside the zone. Simplify the footwork and rebuild one mode at a time.

Sequence

  • 3 FB — Glove Side Regular Stretch
  • 3 FB — Arm Side Regular Stretch
  • 3 FB — Glove Side Quick Stretch
  • 3 FB — Arm Side Quick Stretch
  • 4 FB — Coach-Called Target Regular Stretch
  • 4 FB — Coach-Called Target Quick Stretch
  • 2 Pitchouts — RHH Side Stretch
  • 2 Pitchouts — LHH Side Stretch

Delivery Modes

  • Regular: The pitcher’s normal stretch delivery with a runner on base.
  • Quick: A controlled faster delivery that preserves direction and intent.
  • Pitchout: A deliberately elevated outside target on the called batter side.
  • Usable: A pitch that reaches the called area and can be received cleanly.

This workout is intentionally performed from the stretch. Compare the pitcher’s own regular and quick deliveries; do not impose one universal time-to-plate standard.

Development or preseason: 1–2 times per week with about 48 hours between structured mound sessions.

In season: 0–1 development bullpen per week. A game appearance or other meaningful mound session replaces it.

Arm Care

Quality ends the session before the count does.

Pitch counts are ceilings, not quotas. Adjust the session for age, recent workload, current season, recovery, mechanics, and the pitcher in front of you.

This workout is an educational pitching-development resource, not medical advice or a rehabilitation program. Adjust it for the pitcher’s age, experience, recent workload, recovery, and established throwing plan.

  • Stop immediately for shoulder or elbow pain, sharp discomfort, or altered mechanics.
  • Reduce the workload when command, effort, or movement quality deteriorates.
  • Count the full throwing day—warm-ups, drill throws, long toss, bullpen pitches, and game pitches all matter.
