Nine-Out Bullpen

Simulate three innings and nine hitters while measuring outs, efficiency, first-pitch execution, and decision quality.

Foundation

Competition · Sequencing

Level

L4

Length

Up to 36

Pitches

Fastball, Changeup, Advanced Pitch 1, Advanced Pitch 2

Goal: Record how efficiently the pitcher converts nine simulated hitters into outs while using the established arsenal intentionally.

WARMUP

Before the first pitch.

Complete a proper throwing warm-up before scoring pitches. Use full-body movement, progressive catch play, and enough mound-ramp-up pitches for the listed pitch types and delivery modes to feel ready.

Warm-up throws are not included in the workout score, but they still count toward the pitcher’s total throwing workload for the day.

THE WORKOUT

Sequence

Use Stretch for every pitch. Each simulated hitter starts with a new 0–0 count and receives no more than 4 pitches.

Inning 1 — Get Ahead

Complete 3 simulated hitters. Prioritize a clear first-pitch plan and early count leverage.

Inning 2 — Manage Contact

Complete 3 simulated hitters. Use the full arsenal to create weak or manageable contact.

Inning 3 — Finish Under Pressure

Complete 3 simulated hitters. Commit to the best pitch and target for each situation.

Simulation and Outcome Rules

  • Simulated Hitter: One independent matchup beginning at 0–0 and ending with an out, continuation, walk, or hard-contact result.
  • Out: A strikeout or coach-graded contact result that would reasonably produce an out.
  • Pitch Limit: End the matchup after an outcome or Pitch 4, whichever comes first.
  • Decision Rule: The pitcher declares the pitch and target before every throw. The coach records the outcome supported by the execution and Game Mode tags.

Continue the simulated hitter according to the recorded result. Do not add a fifth pitch. If no outcome is reached after Pitch 4, the coach records the best-supported result and begins the next hitter.

Up to 36 tracked pitches: 9 simulated hitters across 3 innings with a maximum of 4 pitches per hitter. Pitch mix is determined by the pitcher’s plans.

Development or preseason: 1 time per week with at least 72 hours after the previous meaningful throwing session.

In season: use only when it replaces—not supplements—a game appearance or other full competitive bullpen.

Coaching Focus

  • Require a clear pitch and target before every throw.
  • Use the full arsenal with purpose rather than forcing equal pitch counts.
  • Avoid predictable sequences when the same pitch or location repeats.
  • Record the outcome and move to the next hitter without extra pitches.
  • Stop when fatigue changes command, effort, decision quality, or delivery quality.

RESULTS

Score the Session

Count outs recorded out of 9 simulated hitters. An out is a strikeout or coach-graded contact result that would reasonably produce an out; use Game Mode results and session notes to confirm efficiency and decision quality.

7–9 outs

Great

The pitcher converted most simulated hitters into outs while maintaining efficient plans through all three innings.

5–6 outs

Competitive

The competitive plan was usable, but one inning or recurring outcome limited efficiency.

0–4 outs

Keep Working

Too many hitters reached an unfavorable outcome or required the full pitch limit. Simplify the next competitive session to one inning emphasis.

Target Definitions and Sequence Rules

  • Broad Strike Window: A comfortably sized area inside the established strike window.
  • Middle-Down, Below Zone / Arm Side, Below Zone: The reachable area immediately below the named in-zone target.
  • Glove-Side Off Edge / Arm-Side Off Edge: The reachable lane immediately beyond the called edge.
  • Pitcher-Selected Plan: The pitcher declares all 3 pitches, their order, and their Specific Targets before Pitch 1.
  • Sequence Rule: A miss does not change any remaining pitch or target in the sequence.

Record the pitch-specific MISS marker and finish all three pitches with the declared plan. Do not restart the sequence or add a makeup pitch.

  • 2–0 — Coach calls FB or CH to a Broad Attack Window
  • 3–1 — Pitcher chooses the most trusted pitch and a Broad Target
  • 2–1 — Coach calls FB or CH to a Specific Target

Count and Set Rules

  • Broad Attack Window: A comfortably sized area inside the established strike window that the pitcher can attack without guiding.
  • Broad Target: A pitcher-selected window appropriate to the trusted pitch.
  • Specific Target: One clearly defined location such as Middle-Down, Glove-Side Window, or Arm-Side Window.
  • Independent Counts: The 2–0, 3–1, and 2–1 pitches are separate situations, not one simulated at-bat.
  • Set: One pass through all three count situations in the written order.

Record the pitch-specific MISS marker and finish the set. A miss does not create a new count, change the next call, or earn a makeup pitch; the next pitch begins at its original written count.

Delivery tracking: Enable Windup and Stretch. Do not use Game Mode or record ball/strike results.

+

FB SPOT

Fastball finishes within its assigned target.

+

FB MISS

Fastball finishes outside its assigned target.

+

CH SPOT

Changeup finishes within its assigned target.

+

CH MISS

Changeup finishes outside its assigned target.

Coaching Focus

  • Establish pitch type, target, and intent before every throw.
  • Treat every pitch as a new opening-pitch plan and reset completely.
  • Attack the assigned window without guiding the ball.
  • Maintain fastball intent and arm speed on the changeup.
  • Record a miss and move to the next original assignment without carryover.

RESULTS

Score the Session

Count pitch-specific SPOT results out of 24. Each pitch succeeds when it receives the appropriate SPOT marker; the score measures assigned-location execution, not balls and strikes.

18–24 SPOT pitches

Great

Opening-pitch plans were repeatable across both pitch types, targets, and deliveries.

14–17 SPOT pitches

Competitive

The pitcher showed a usable opening-pitch plan, with one pitch type, target, or delivery producing more misses.

0–13 SPOT pitches

Keep Working

Opening-pitch execution was not yet repeatable. Simplify the target and rebuild one pitch type at a time.

Pitches

Fastball, Changeup

Execute 12 FB–CH sequences from a shared initial visual lane to distinct assigned locations.

Warmup

Before the first pitch.

Complete a proper throwing warm-up before scoring pitches. Use full-body movement, progressive catch play, and enough mound-ramp-up pitches for the arm, fastball, and delivery to feel ready.

Warm-up throws are not included in the workout score, but they still count toward the pitcher’s total throwing workload for the day.

The workout

Block 1

Middle-Down Tunnel

Windup — Repeat sequence 3x

  • FB — Middle-Down
  • CH — Below Zone

Stretch — Repeat sequence 3x

  • FB — Middle-Down
  • CH — Below Zone

    Block 2

    Arm-Side Tunnel

    Windup — Repeat sequence 3x

    • FB — Arm-Side Down
    • CH — Arm Side, Below Zone

    Stretch — Repeat sequence 3x

    • FB — Arm-Side Down
    • CH — Arm Side, Below Zone

      Sequence Rules

      • Middle-Down: The broad lower-middle portion of the established strike window.
      • Middle-Down, Below Zone: The area immediately below the Middle-Down target—not just any location outside the zone.
      • Arm-Side Down: The lower arm-side portion of the established strike window.
      • Arm Side, Below Zone: The area immediately below or slightly farther arm side of the Arm-Side Down target.

Throw the FB first and the CH second in every pair. Use the same delivery, tempo, arm speed, and initial lane; let the changeup grip create the later speed and movement separation. Do not manipulate the release to force movement.

If either pitch misses, record the appropriate miss marker and finish the pair as planned. The second pitch keeps its assigned target; it does not follow the first pitch’s actual miss. Do not add a makeup pitch.

Development or preseason: 1–2 times per week with about 48 hours between structured mound sessions.

In season: 0–1 development bullpen per week. A game appearance or other meaningful mound session replaces it.

      SETUP

      Track This Session

Choose Bullpen Session. Create two markers:

      +

      FB SPOT

Fastball finishes within its assigned window.

      +

      FB MISS

Fastball finishes outside its assigned window.

      +

      CH SPOT

Fastball finishes within its assigned window.

      +

      CH MISS

Fastball finishes within its assigned window.

      Coaching Focus

      • Call the batter side before every sequence.
      • Keep all three pitches under one clear location plan.
      • Judge each pitch by its role—not by strike result alone.
      • Complete the sequence before discussing adjustments.
      • Stop if fatigue changes arm speed, effort, or command.

      Results

      Score the Session

Count complete sequences graded Sequence Hit. A sequence succeeds only when all three pitches remain usable for their intended roles.

      6–8 complete sequences

      Great

The pitcher executed complete tunnels against both batter sides. Confirm which pattern created the strongest repeatability.

      5 complete sequences

      Competitive

Several sequences were usable, but one batter side or pattern broke down more often. Build from the stronger tunnel.

      0–4 complete sequences

      Keep Working

Too many sequences lost their plan before the third pitch. Simplify to one batter side and one pattern.

      Before the first pitch.

Complete a proper throwing warm-up before scoring pitches. Use full-body movement, progressive catch play, and enough mound-ramp-up pitches for the arm, fastball, and delivery to feel ready.

      Coaching Focus

      • Name the changeup intent before every repetition.
      • Keep arm speed and delivery committed for both roles.
      • Use a broad window for strike intent.
      • Define a reachable chase area for finish intent.
      • Do not reward a miss that fails the called role.

      SETUP Play Catch APP

Set Up Your Pitch Track Session

Choose Bullpen Session. Create four markers:

      +

      FASTBALL

The changeup reaches the called broad strike window.

      +

      CH-S

The changeup reaches the called finish area below the zone.

      +

      CH-F

The changeup misses the target but remains usable for its called intent.

      +

      CH-COMP

The changeup finishes outside a usable area for its called intent.

      +

      CH-NON-COMP

The changeup finishes outside a usable area for its called intent.

      Results

      Score the Session

Count changeups graded Strike Hit or Finish Hit. Score the 12 changeups only, then compare strike intent and finish intent separately.

      9–12 intent hits

      Great

The pitcher gave the changeup two clear, repeatable roles. Confirm whether strike and finish intent were equally reliable.

      7–8 intent hits

      Competitive

One or both intentions were usable but inconsistent. Identify which window needs the next focused block.

      0–6 intent hits

      Keep Working

The two intentions were not distinct enough yet. Widen the strike window and simplify the finish target.

      • 2 CH — Lower Strike Window Stretch
      • 2 Sequences — FB Strike → CH Finish Below Windup
      • 2 Sequences — FB Strike → CH Finish Below Stretch

      Intent Windows

      • Strike Intent: A broad, usable changeup window within the zone.
      • Lower Strike: The lower portion of the established strike window.
      • Finish Intent: A defined chase area immediately below the zone.
      • Same Delivery: Complete both pitches in each sequence from the assigned delivery.

The changeup does not need perfect edge command. It must finish in a location that serves the called strike or finish role. Stretch-only pitchers may complete the full session from the stretch.

Development or preseason: 1–2 times per week with about 48 hours between structured mound sessions.

In season: 0–1 development bullpen per week. A game appearance or other meaningful mound session replaces it.
